A Fellow Commissioner’s View

Amy Chen brings solid water and policy experience along with decades of water leadership and engineering background to the Foothill Municipal Water District. While this is a good foundation, it is Amy’s insightfulness and willingness to ask tough, but good questions, providing much needed insights into the challenging issues our community faces. I have had the pleasure of working with Amy and witness her genuine concern around issues that affect our community while serving on the Public Works and Traffic Commission.

Amy has demonstrated real concern around the issues facing our community, including resiliency and management of water resources. La Cañada Flintridge, much like many of the communities in our state, is affected by unpredictable water supply, caused by drought, flooding, and inefficient allocation of resources.

The consequences of water scarcity are becoming more pronounced every year, and lack of planning can hinder our ability to manage risk, including fires. Meanwhile, rates will continue to rise as the law of supply and demand dictates. Good governance, planning, and responsible investment in water infrastructure will help mitigate some of these pain points.

As a partner in a water strategy consultancy, I see these challenges all the time, and I asked Amy what her priorities were and why she was running. She was clear. Her priorities were 1) water sustainability, 2) affordability and fiscal responsibility; 3) emergency preparedness; and 4) transparency and accountability. Amy understands the issues we face and has my vote for director of Foothill Water District, and hopefully yours as well.
